Music by: Kristin Bair
Lyrics by: Kevin Hammonds
Performed by: Ally Bonino
Writing team Kevin Hammonds and Kristin Bair wrote this ballad about single mom Emma, who after a string of bad decisions and failed relationships, is back at her childhood home caring for her mother. A neighbor suggests she could use a bit of fantasy in her life, but Emma clearly spells out her opinion of reality vs. fantasy. This song takes a us on a real journey and asks a performer to be a little raw and vulnerable. And while musically unpretentious, it can be heartbreaking in the right hands.
Outside the Box
Music by: Russ Kaplan
Lyrics by: Sara Wordsworth
Performed by: Angela Travino
In this jazzy, beat poet inspired song from Russ Kaplan & Sara Wordworth’s show, “Dear Albert Einstein,” a teacher instructs her students how to think a little more creatively. If you’re looking something jazzy to add to your book try out this fun, quirky character song.
Music by: Mary Mitchell-Campbell
Lyrics by: Leslie Becker
Performed by: Jodi Darling
From the show, “Hot Mamas: A Pregnancy Cabaret,” a mother sings a love song to her unborn baby while expressing her anxiety about what’s to come. It starts out quite funny but then quickly moves on to a moving lyric and a sweeping melody. Who could ask for anything more than that?!
Music by: Joe Kinosian
Lyrics by: Kellen Blair
Performed by: Sarah Ziegler
This accompaniment of this comedic song by writing team Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair is simple enough to make it a fun choice to bring to an audition. The singer admits her fondness for “person in this room” who turns out to be… her accompanist!
Music & Lyrics by: Rachel Peters
Performed by: Mary Testa
Who doesn’t love a good torch song? Rachel Peters’ “Medicore Man” has a twist and it’s a great way to show off both your bluesy and comedic chops. We were lucky enough to capture the great Mary Testa singing this song at our launch concert back in 2013.
