Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you are.

As temperatures rise in New York City – and having just seen the “super moon” (whatever that means) – folks here are perhaps a little more crazy than normal.  It seemed a fitting time to feature five songs we think are wonderfully absurd!  From frivolous whim to  passionate obsession, these fantastic songs cover all the crazy bases.

Enjoy!

Angora

from The Passion of Ed Wood
Music: Rob Kendt
Lyrics: Justin Warner

Perfect for: Broadway Baritone

“Angora” is a song from our long-gestating Ed Wood musical, currently titled “The Passion of Ed Wood.” Wood’s fetish for the rare Turkish rabbit fur was well-known, as was his brand of transvestism–he was most turned on by wearing clothes that women had actually worn. Here he sings to his confused long-term girlfriend Dolores. This recording features Kurt Robbins and a live band at Ars Nova.

Get Down

from Click, Clack Moo
Music: Brad Alexander
Lyrics: Kevin Del Aguila

Perfect for: Broadway Baritone

“Get Down” is a song from CLICK, CLACK, MOO sung by “Duck” to cows Maddy, Darlene and Loretta, who decide to go on strike, withholding milk from Farmer Brown after he refuses to give the cows electric blankets for the cold nights in the barn.  In the song, Duck gloats not only about his own feathers but about the abundance of down bursting from every corner of Farmer Brown’s house, which further fans the flames of the cows’ mounting anger.  The brilliant Kevin Del Aguila handed me the lyric, which I set it to music pretty quickly because Kevin had created such a clean, solid structure and awesome lyrical hook.

Spicy Underwear

from Hapless Romance
Music & Lyrics: Rebecca Greenstein

Perfect for: High Belt/Mix

“Spicy Underwear” was one of the first successful songs I ever wrote and it was written on a dare. Well, not so much a dare as a suggestion posed as too ridiculous to work. Some close friends and I loved going to Kohl’s and shopping for underwear. (Yes. Listen, it’s not weird – they have really great prices, so you can try out all different kinds of styles you wouldn’t normally buy.) We would get fancy, funny, and sexy styles and call it “spicy underwear.” When I told them that I was starting to write songs, they suggested I write a song entitled “Spicy Underwear,” about how the spicy underwear makes you feel confident while no one else knows it’s oh-so spicy. It was a great prompt. Once I started writing, it flowed out very quickly. I’m lucky enough to have a very talented actor with a similar comedic sense as a sister, and it’s her you can hear on the recording! Hope you enjoy it!

You Make Me Feel So French

Music: Paul Loesel
Lyrics: Scott Burkell

Perfect for: Broadway Baritone

Growing up in the corn-fed Midwest the romantic appeal of someone from, you know, ‘over there’, where the men are swarthy and wear leather pants and the women smoke and pout a lot was palpable. The idea that someone’s love, the way they looked at you, could possibly make you feel like you belonged, even temporarily, to this club was the inspiration for this song. – Scott Burkell

YouTube Sensation

Music & Lyrics by: Will Reynolds

Perfect for: High Belt Mix

“YouTube Sensation” was written for my friend and fellow singer/songwriter, the amazing Carrie Manolakos – who is an ACTUAL YouTube Sensation.  If you don’t know, run to your favorite internet device – her cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” has over a million hits, not to mention a slew of others.  The YouTube “movement” really intrigued/tickled me as it gained more and more momentum –  the dream that ONE video could skyrocket a kid singing in their bedroom to instant stardom.  That they just might become a YouTube Sensation.  Enjoy!
